Description
This course equips supervisors with the essential communication techniques and confidence needed to effectively address and correct off-track employee performance, preventing minor issues from becoming major crises. The goal is to keep the team moving in the right direction and coach employees toward better performance.
Course Objectives
Supervisors will learn to confidently and consistently provide the prompt, specific corrective feedback needed to ensure their team achieves its mission and goals.
Identify Off-Track Behaviors: Classify different “types” of off-track employees and identify appropriate supervisory responses to each. This includes:
- The Low Capability employee (lacks skills).
- The Low Work Effort employee (content with mediocrity).
- The Overly Dependent employee (lacks initiative).
- The Unfocused employee (head in the clouds).
- The Antagonistic employee (strong-willed and opinionated).
- The Drama employee (prone to crisis and gossip).
Avoid Supervisor Traps: Investigate and avoid common supervisory pitfalls that lead to delayed action and negatively impact morale, such as difficulty with confrontation or avoiding counseling. Supervisors learn to focus on the person, not just the problem, and stick to discussing specific performance issues.
Conduct Effective Feedback Conversations: Prepare for and practice effective constructive feedback conversations in two distinct styles:
- “Telling” (Setting Expectations): Used when the problem is clear, requiring direct and clear communication about what the supervisor expects to see. Supervisors practice delivering a simple, direct message while avoiding emotional language, accusations, and distractions
- “Asking” (Facilitating Insight): Used to help employees reflect and develop their own solutions, especially helpful for developing skills and problem-solving abilities. Supervisors learn to use open-ended questions to guide staff to a positive outcome.
The course emphasizes the importance of preparing thoroughly, remaining consistent, and acting with planned boldness. Ultimately, it stresses the importance of supervisor self-care, building a supportive network, and recognizing the immensely important and rewarding nature of the work.
